On one cover is a painting of actor Romana Vrede by Marlene Dumas, painted in 2019. In Dumas’ words, “Romana Vrede is a Dutch actor who won the Theo d’Or theatre prize in the Netherlands in 2017. The reward required a portrait and Romana asked me. I painted more than one portrait of her but ‘the skull’ is our favourite”.
On another cover artist and designer Gareth Wrighton photographs himself as a Cherry Pie which is published again inside along with a piece on his work by C.L. Mayers called ‘This is Red Pill Couture; it’s the problem and the solution’: A lethal dose of Gareth Wrighton.
The third cover is an image created by Ibrahim Kamara of his friend Issac Poleon, it is also inside alongside a portfolio of 20 pages of images created by Ibrahim of a selection of his friends and fellow creators.
The issue is a collection of stories and pieces that are very personal to those that have written, photographed, illustrated and created them. Marlene Dumas made a selection of her work over 20 pages, artist Ryan Gander have a moving and personal conversation with singer Joe Talbot of Idles, artist Sheila Hicks is photographed in her studio in Paris by Paolo Roversi and at the beginning of the magazine where there would usually be a little more advertising support, Luncheon has instead given pages to young designers, asking each one to nominate someone they would like to support on the following page.
