A two-part book by Olivo Barbieri, ‘Cinematography’ gathers work from 1982 to 2012 in “The End: Movie Theaters”, and from 1995 to 2015 in “Filmography”. While the first deals with the slow demise of the classic cinema, documenting shuttered, dilapidated buildings and antique projectors in a poignant series of photographs, the second moves ahead to explore emerging techniques in (digital) film production through a combination of short films and installations produced by the artist. Despite Barbieri’s nostalgia for a bygone era, the book offers an in-depth look at his optimism for the medium today, rooted in new possibilities. With an interview by Giovanna Silva.
